ABOUT
UNITED CHURCH OF CHRIST

GET TO KNOW US

The United Church of Christ (UCC) is a distinct and diverse community of Christians that come together as one church to join faith and action.  With over 5,000 churches and nearly one million members across the U.S., the UCC serves God in the co-creation of a just and sustainable world.  The UCC is a church of firsts, a church of extravagant welcome, and a church where "…they may all be one" (John 17:21).

THE CHURCH OF FIRSTS

Since 1957, the United Church of Christ has been the church of firsts, weaving God’s message of hope and extravagant welcome with action for justice and peace. Together, we live out our faith in ways that effect change in our communities.  The UCC's many "firsts" mean that we have inherited a tradition of acting upon the demands of our faith.  When we read in Galatians: "There is no longer Jew or Greek, there is no longer slave or free, there is no longer male and female; for all of you are one in Christ Jesus"—a demand is made upon us. And so we were the first historically white denomination to ordain an African-American, the first to ordain a woman, the first to ordain an openly gay man, and the first Christian church to affirm the right of same-gender couples to marry. We were in the forefront of the anti-slavery movement and the Civil Rights movement.  Our response to the demands of our faith is woven into the history of our country.

A CHURCH OF EXTRAVAGANT WELCOME

Today, we continue to change lives throughout the world. We work alongside more than 200 mission partners. We labor ceaselessly to fight injustice, in the United States and abroad. We instill our vision into our youth and young adults, forging leaders who will imagine new dreams. And we sustain and develop church leaders, pastors, and our local churches to live their faith in exciting new ways.  We believe in a God that is still speaking, a God that is all-loving and inclusive.  We are a church that welcomes and accepts everyone as they are, where your mind is nourished as much as your soul.

We are a church where Jesus the healer meets Jesus the revolutionary, and where together, we grow a just and peaceful world.

ZWINGLI
MISSION

"Inviting ALL to Follow Jesus Through Faith and Action"

We have found a very special relationship with Christ in our lives . We know we are the hands and feet of Christ in the world.   As with all things good, we strive to share our love and experience with the world. We believe in a church outside of the four walls of a building. It is our mission that our members will go out into the world to spread the word to everyone with whom  they connect..

ZWINGLI

VISION

As you go, proclaim this message: 'The kingdom of heaven has come near.'

As in the Gospel of Matthew text above, we believe our purpose as Christians is to go and share the loving, serving kingdom of God which has come to us through Jesus Christ.  We see a Heaven as not just a destination but as the  kingdom of joy and love here on this Earth.  We know through our hands and feet the Christ will continue to build a better world.

ZWINGLI

GOALS

To Serve and Build the Kingdom

We are striving to bring about a trusting,  loving world .  We  impact our community by sharing  the love of Jesus with every person that we encounter . We strive to live out the  compassion, and grace that Jesus shared with everyone he encountered. Join us  in accomplishing our goals.

So tell me about this Church Community called Zwingli.

Kathleen Grossen

I may be a little partial since I have attended this church all my life, but the energy and life that has been growing here the past several months has been wonderful! It is so heart warming to be able to walk in the doors and see smiles and love from those that attend. The people there truly wish to carry out the church's mission statement of "Inviting all to follow Jesus through faith and action." I'm so proud to have this place as my church home!

Mostly good, a couple that made me question. Since I've been at Zwingli, I'm content but very much looking forward to growing. Larry was one reason I wanted to attend. His heart is bigger then the entire planet! All the other pastors who helped in this transition were absolutely amazing, awesome, and inspiring. Pastor Jeanie is close to my heart. She is an amazing lady. And now our amazing and awesome Pastor Lance Smith and his amazing family.

History

Our church story begins with Ulrich Zwingli who was born New Year's Day, 1484, in Switzerland. The leader of the Protestant Reformation in German speaking Switzerland.

Early Swiss settlers in the area would worship with the Methodist and Baptist congregations in Monticello.  However, the Swiss immigrants wanted a church of their own where they could sing hymns in German and have their children baptized and brought up according to the customs of their native land.

The first German Church in the Monticello area was Washington Reformation which was established in 1876.  In 1884 fifteen area men met with the Washington Reformation Consistory to discuss the organization of an Evangelical Reformed Church in Monticello.  1887 marked the birth of Zwingli Evangelical and Reform Church.   In 1920, the Zwingli confirmation service was held for the first time in English and the church began using hymnals in English for both Sunday School and Worship services.

Like a growing child, Zwingli has gone through many changes.  In 1957 Evangelical/ Reformed and Congregational / Christian Churches merged and  Zwingli United Church of Christ came to be .  There have been many changes in the church since its birth, not only in appearance but attitudes towards others.  We welcome everyone through our doors no matter who they may be –  (“Inviting All to Follow Jesus Through Faith and Action”).

Zwingli United Church of Christ is governed by the Consistory and the congregation of the church.  Each year we hold an annual meeting in January to discuss our budget for the year, elect new Consistory members, and discuss suggestions from the congregation and any upcoming projects for the year.

Since its birth, Zwingli's Swiss heritage has flourished and is still a part of our church.  We are not just Zwingli United Church of Christ; we are a family made up of young and old.  We continue the Sharing of God’s Love with all .

"That they may all be one."
